Melissa Borrell Design ushers in a novel jewelry concept: Pop-Up™ Jewelry

Pop-Up™ Jewelry is a do it yourself jewelry kit – twist out, bend, and put on a
3-D piece of artistry!

The new Pop-UP ™ pendant and earrings come still connected to the bordering metal from which they are perforated. Like the additional conceptions in the Pop-Out ™ series, Pop-UP ™ jewelry attaches to a silver chain or earring hooks required to construct the patterns into a pendant or earrings. The new characteristic of the Pop-UP ™ jewelry is that you are able to bend the “petals” of the design to make the piece 3 dimensional.

“It is very entertaining to get folks engaged in the process of constructing the jewelry. By allowing people to mold the piece and arrive at decisions about how to curve the pieces I would like to make them think about the transmutation that comes about when a three-dimensional form is constructed from a two-dimensional sheet and how that comes about. In my work I have always been involved in the association between two-dimensional
drawings and three-dimensional forms. Both the original Pop-Out ™ Jewelry and the new Pop-
UP™ pendant and earrings are a method for me to show others how our perception of a pattern is varied contingent on whether we look at it as a drawing or as a sculpture.”

Self-taught as a jewelry designer, Melissa Borrell has acquired national and international fame in design circuits and has formed a following of dedicated and enthusiastic collectors. She opened her studio in San Francisco in 1998, making high end art jewelry prior to establishing the Pop-Out ™ Jewelry collection in 2007. Her jewelry pieces, both hand-crafted and production pieces, can best be depicted as “wearable artwork”.

Shops around the world are sporting Borrell’s conceptions, most notably, the MoMA Design stores in New York State and Japan, the SFMOMA MuseumStore, the Whitney Museum of Art, District of Columbia, the Hirshhorn Museum at the Smithsonian Institute, The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and museum stores and design stores reaching as faraway as Puerto Rico, Canada and Australia.
